HRC Remembers
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy

The passing of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., marks a great loss for this nation, and the Human Rights Campaign mourns the loss of a friend and strong ally to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Kennedy was a longtime champion of civil rights and an unwavering supporter of the LGBT community, leading the charge on important legislation like the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and forcefully opposing discriminatory measures, including the Defense of Marriage Act and the Federal Marriage Amendment.

HRC is forever grateful for the innumerable times he stood up to fight for the rights of LGBT people and the HIV/AIDS community. We honor his memory by pushing forward in our fight for LGBT equality.

In the words of Sen. Kennedy, “It is wrong for our civil laws to deny any American the basic right to be part of a family, to have loved ones with whom to build a secure future and share life's joys and tears, and to be free from the stain of bigotry and discrimination.”
