Discrimination Has No Place in New Jersey Schools
‘Tonight’s school board meeting sends a message to young people that differences are to be demonized,’ said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.
WASHINGTON — Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement concerning reports that the employment of a New Jersey substitute teacher is up for debate at a school board meeting tonight because she is transgender. Lily McBeth, age 70, has a solid teaching record, but one parent is staging an effort to remove McBeth from the school because she is transgender.“Tonight’s school board meeting sends a message to young people that differences are to be demonized,” said Solmonese. “People deserve to be judged by the job they do and by all accounts this teacher has done an outstanding job. Anti-transgender discrimination has no place in our schools. We stand by Garden State Equality and other New Jersey leaders in calling for fair treatment for Lily McBeth. We urge fair-minded New Jerseyans to turn out to dispel this myth.”
Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocacy group, is calling on members to attend the meeting at 7:00 p.m., Feb. 27, at 511 Main St., West Creek, Southern Ocean County, N.J.
The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
