Justice for All? The Importance of a Fair and Balanced Judiciary to the GLBT Community

1/1/2004, Human Rights Campaign Foundation

Our nation’s courts play a vital role in the GLBT community’s journey from second-class citizenship to equal protection under the law. Yet the courts – and the judges whose duty it is to interpret the law and safeguard our rights and liberties – are in many ways the least-examined branch of government. Polls show that the selection of judges is not among the most important issues to the average voter, yet all Americans – and the GLBT community and its allies in particular – should be deeply interested in the selection of judges.

Justice for All? is part of an educational campaign supported by the Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation. The campaign’s goal is to inform diverse groups about the importance of a fair and balanced judiciary.  The publication clearly outlines the unique relationship that exists between voters, legislators, and judges, and it is important that all Americans have a strong understanding of this relationship.
