Goodnight Mommies
By Kim Amadore
Every night my mommies say, "It's time for bed, Pumpkin."
And every night I say back to both my Mama and Mommy, "I'm not tired."
I open my eyes real wide to show them how awake I feel. But Mama picks me up and carries me to my room.
I try to say all the words I know so my mommies will sit with me and listen. Mommy listens and smiles with Mama, but still reaches for my pajamas. I tilt my head side to side and do a dance. That always makes my mommies stop and laugh.
But even while laughing, Mama manages to get my pajama top over my wiggling head. I stretch across the bed for my favorite book because I know my mommies like to read. But stretching makes it easy for Mama to put my feet through my pajama bottoms. This means the lights are soon to go out.
Mommy opens my favorite book and reads as Mama and I listen. But the last page comes too soon. The kisses from my mommies tell me I have no time left today.
All I can do is say "Goodnight Mommies" and wait for the sun to bring me tomorrow.
