Binational & Bisexual Discrimination
By Renata
I obtained my green card when I married my sweetheart in 2002. Our relationship did not turn out how we expected, so we got an amicable separation two years ago. Since then I have fallen in love with an amazing woman, and now some people claim that my previous marriage was false and done only for green card purposes.
Being bisexual, and perfectly capable of falling in love with someone from any gender, puts me in a position of being singled out for scrutiny over and over again. An ironic twist to my story is that I am not allowed to sponsor my partner, who is from my homeland of Brazil, to come live with me, as my ex-husband did for me. And the United States won’t even allow her into the country to visit.
Despite my desire and application for American citizenship, we are now considering emigrating to Canada, where we hope we would be able to reunite. It is pretty sad that I may be forced out of a country that I learned to love and call my home due to such discriminatory immigration laws.
