Michigan H.B. 4259
Summary: This bill would amend adoption law to allow two unmarried persons to petition for adoption. Currently only a single person or married couple may adopt in Michigan. A parent with legal custody of a child may also join in an adoption petition with a person to whom he or she is not married (i.e. second parent adoption). The bill does not contain any language with regard to the sexual orientation of adoptive parents.
Status: This bill was introduced February 13, 2007 and referred to the House Judiciary Committee. On May 9, 2007, the bill passed the House Judiciary Committee by an 8-5 party line vote. It now heads to the House floor.
