Frequently Asked Questions
Can I attend if I’m still in seminary?
Yes. Clergy Call is a great networking and professional development opportunity for those preparing to enter the ministry, priesthood, rabbinate or other roles in religious leadership. We are trying to reserve scholarships for ordained clergy and other spiritual leaders but we encourage seminarians, etc to apply and join us as well.
Can congregational lay leaders participate in Clergy Call?
Yes. Deacons, Eucharistic ministers, choir directors, religious education directors, spouses and other congregational lay leaders are invited to participate in Clergy Call. We recognize that is takes multiple leaders to sustain a faith community and we want to honor the service of the laity by inviting all religious leaders to attend the conference. Additionally, we know that ordained clergy of many denominations are unable (or unwilling) to speak out for LGBT equality with the same freedom as their denomination’s lay leaders. In that spirit, we welcome the voices of the people in the pews who are inspired to advocate for justice and equality on behalf of their faith’s teachings.
Are participants responsible for scheduling their own lobby visits?
No. HRC’s Religion and Faith Program will be scheduling all lobby visits for Clergy Call. For this reason, we ask that you register as early as possible to avoid the difficulties of last minute scheduling. If you have a personal relationship with your elected officials and are interested in helping us to schedule “member meetings” (meetings with the Senator or Representative), please communicate that information to us by contacting Joanna Blotner at Joanna.blotner@hrc.org or 202-572-8973.
