Reclaiming Value in International Development

Chloe Schwenke, transgender advocate, Quaker leader and trainer for HRC’s Gender Identity and Our Faith Communities, has written an important book, Reclaiming Value in International Development: The Moral Dimensions of Development Policy and Practice in Poor Countries.  Although on the surface this book may seem to have little to say about LGBT issues and faith, in actuality it offers important insights on gender identity from the moral and religious framework of people living in some of the poorest countries in the world.   Schwenke, who worked for 14 years in Africa and many more in other developing nations, discusses transgender and intersex issues through a global frame, always mindful of the moral context within which attitudes are formed.  By permission of the publisher, Praeger Press, you can read an excerpt from her book.
