Every Oct. 11, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies celebrate National Coming Out Day. They hold workshops, speak-outs, rallies and other kinds of events all aimed at showing the public that LGBT people are everywhere. But what’s so special about Oct. 11?

Decide what kind of event or series of events you want to hold Consider your audience, what your message is and what you want to accomplish. Do you want to provide a forum for GLBT folks to tell their stories or do you want to show your campus/town that GLBT people exist? Is your event by and for GLBT people themselves or do you want to educate a broader community?
