Assessing your organization’s LGBT cultural competence requires an understanding of the general level of skills, knowledge and comfort of your staff to work directly with the LGBT community. For smaller agencies this may be easier to gauge, but for larger agencies, particularly those with multiple sites and divisions, it may be more difficult.
As in all forms of employment discrimination, transgender people may experience bias during application, employment, promotion and/or termination. An employee may experience gender identity-based discrimination upon coming out as transgender, transitioning on the job, discovery of their birth sex or even mere suspicion of transgender status.
