HIV & AIDS Research
Research at the National Institutes of Health has led to major advances in the understanding and treatment of HIV and related opportunistic infections. Because HIV affects so many systems of the body, research is conducted across NIH — at all 24 institutes, centers and divisions. Success against AIDS and other diseases depends on national research. Increases in funding for the NIH, with a strong Office of AIDS Research to coordinate AIDS research efforts, is critical.
This funding will support epidemiology and natural history of the disease, basic science, development of AIDS treatments, AIDS vaccines and behavioral research.
