Help End Workplace Discrimination

Chances are you hope to get a job once you graduate, right? And, you probably want prospective employers to evaluate you based on your degree, grades and experience, right? In 29 states, an employer can legally throw your sexual orientation into the mix of whether or not you get hired. In 37 states, you can be fired based on your gender identity.

Queer workplace discrimination is a reality, but there is a solution – help pass the fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

  • Letter-writing Campaign
Next to an in-person visit, hand-written letters are the most powerful way to get a message to Congress. In the age of computers, hand-written messages are a rarity and highly valued because of the time and attention needed to create them.
  • Letters to the Editor
The letters-to-the-editor section of your campus or local paper is the ideal forum for getting your message to – and the attention of – decision makers and elected officials. More people read the letters-to-the-editor section than almost any other part of the paper. It’s the page most people turn to first.
  • Op-Eds
Editorials educate a paper’s readers on important issues of the day, shape public attitudes and affect key policy decisions. College/university presidents, administration and boards of trustees are sensitive to editorial opinion published in the campus or local paper.
  • Student Government Resolutions
SGA Resolutions demonstrate campus support for key issues. The more a resolution is visible to an elected official, the more serious they’ll realize the issue is to you and are more likely to act. Resolutions also have an added impact because they carry the weight of your entire student body.
  • Phone Calls to District & Washington Offices
On the day of the vote, make a phone call to your representative’s office. It will shore up any other grassroots actions you’ve taken.
