Assignments
The Human Rights Campaign is committed to helping a greater number of pro-equality candidates get elected to the U.S. House and Senate and state legislators. HRC will target some of the most important state and federal level races and subsequently place HRC Campaign College participants in these states and districts. Each candidate is a supporter for GLBT equality.
Participants will learn necessary skills for the campaign in the August training session. Participants of Campaign College should note, however, that they will work for assigned campaigns, not for the Human Rights Campaign. Accordingly, their positions within the campaign might not specifically advocate for GLBT issues; rather, they will work at the campaign’s discretion, which could include a number of areas such as field work, finance, etc.
Housing & Transportation:
Participants will be housed in community housing secured by the campaigns or the Human Rights Campaign. This community housing may be with HRC members, pro-equality families or full-time staff members of coalition partner organizations within the state. Transportation from DC to the field will be provided, while transportation in the field is generally not provided.
Attire:
It is hot in Washington in August! The attire for the HRC Campaign College Training week is informal — shorts are fine. For the field campaign itself, day-to-day attire is also casual. Jeans and khakis, polos, t-shirts, etc. are fine for most days, but participants should bring one suit and some business casual clothing in case there are more formal occasions. Of course, participants should choose their attire according to the location of their field work.
Training:
Participants will be busy, learning a lot and having a great time with the weeklong training. The training sessions will entail direction from political experts and field organizers, as well as exercises and interaction with speakers and fellow participants.
Shared rooms, the training facility, and the cafeteria are all on-site at the 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md. Participants will take a trip to the Human Rights Campaign headquarters in downtown Washington, D.C., to meet the staff and our president, Joe Solmonese. Participants will learn about what HRC does, get a tour of the building and have a chance to explore the nation’s capital.
