President Bush’s Radio Address Makes Discriminatory Politics His Priority
'President Roosevelt started these radio addresses to unite Americans and President Bush is using them as a tool to divide us as a nation,' said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.
WASHINGTON - Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the following statement regarding President Bush’s radio address promoting the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would write discrimination into the U.S. Constitution for the first time in more than 200 years by denying marriage to same-sex couples and seriously threatening civil unions and domestic partnerships.“President Roosevelt started these radio addresses to unite Americans and President Bush is using them as a tool to divide us as a nation. It’s wrong and it’s un-American. The president should stop threatening to put discrimination in our Constitution and use valuable airtime as an opportunity to lay out an agenda to address the challenges facing our country,” said Solmonese. “President Bush is pandering to far-right extremists and making divisive, discriminatory politics his priority.”
The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
