HRC Statement on Victory for Fairness in Montana
‘Treating all families equally makes all families stronger,’ said HRC National Field Director Seth Kilbourn.
WASHINGTON — Human Rights Campaign National Field Director Seth Kilbourn released the following statement today regarding a ruling by the Montana Supreme Court that the state’s constitution protects gays and lesbians, and that same-sex couples must be treated equally under the state university health care system:
“Treating all families equally makes all families stronger. Now individuals working for the state university system will have the option to buy health insurance for their same-sex partners. This ruling affirms that all hard-working and tax-paying Americans deserve to be treated equally by their government. A distinction between unmarried same-sex and different-sex couples is not constitutionally permissible. The American Civil Liberties Union should be applauded for their leadership in bringing this case and fighting to protect all families equally.”
