Homework

by Kathy Sowa

This just in: the family studies homework for my daughter's eighth grade class defined "family" as those people with whom there is a "blood or marital connection." I saw the faces of three adopted girls as they learned from this assignment – in a very large school district – that none of them had a family. Apparently their families are null and void. No blood tie or no marital tie means no family? Primarily this is an adoption issue, but this is often how gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families are formed. I can't believe they are still teaching such a narrow definition of family!
