Corporate Equality Index: What questions in the 2009 survey are rated?

Questions are designed so that credit is obtained by providing a “Yes” answer. Some questions require HRC review of documentation. All questions, unless otherwise indicated, have the same scope and apply to all U.S. employees.

Rating Criteria (100 total points possible, rounded to nearest point)

1: Non-discrimination policy, diversity training — sexual orientation
1a: Equal Employment Opportunity policy includes “sexual orientation” (15 points)

1b: Diversity training includes sexual orientation as a topic (5 points)

  • Question 20a

2:  Non-discrimination policy, diversity training & benefits — gender identity
2a: Equal Employment Opportunity policy includes “gender identity or expression” or “gender identity” (15 points)

  • Question 2

2b: Diversity training includes “gender identity or expression” or “gender identity” as a topic OR supportive gender transition guidelines in place (5 points)

  • Question 16 OR
  • Question 20b

2c: Insurance includes access for transitioning individuals for at least one category (5 points)

  • Question 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d, 13e (AT LEAST ONE)

3:  Partner benefits
3a: Health insurance available to same-sex partners of employees (15 points)

  • Questions 6 and 8a

3b: COBRA, dental, vision and legal dependent coverage available to same-sex partners of employees (5 points)

  • Questions 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e

3c: At least three other benefits available to same-sex partners of employees (5 points)

  • Questions 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e, 9f, 9g, 10a, 10b, 10c  (AT LEAST THREE)

4: GLBT employee resource group / diversity council (15 points)

Would support a GLBT employee resource group with employer resources if employees expressed an interest (half credit - 7.5 points)

5: Engages in appropriate and respectful advertising and marketing or sponsors GLBT community events or organizations (15 points)

6: Employer exhibits responsible behavior toward the GLBT community; does not engage in action that would undermine GLBT equality (0 points) Employers found engaging in activities that would undermine GLBT equality will have 15 points deducted from their scores.

  • No questions. Criterion is determined based on Human Rights Campaign Foundation research.
