Know an HRC Intern: Sharron Sample
Name: Sharron Sample
Hometown: Yeadon, PA (map)
School: Temple University
Major: Tourism and Hospitality Management
HRC Department: Gala Events
Why intern at HRC?
I’ve always believed that the LGBT community deserves to have the same rights as everyone else; so, why not intern at an organization that fights for those rights? I’ve admired the work that HRC does and I was just happy to get the chance to do my part.
What do you like most about working at HRC?
I love, love, love the people here at HRC; everyone is extremely down-to-earth and very talented in what they do. I truly feel like I’ve learned more from the HRC staff than I would have at any other internship.
What issue is most pressing for the queer community on your campus?
The opportunity to be heard. While students at Temple are accepting of all different kinds of people, the queer community can sometimes be overlooked when it comes to their issues because of the numerous student organizations on such a large campus.
What do you do when you’re not fighting for equality?
I’m either watching really bad reality television shows, spending time with my boyfriend, or talking to my mom and/or sister – they are my best friends.
What was the last song you downloaded?
“Winter Song” by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.
What upcoming events are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about my graduation. On May 14th, I will finally have the chance to walk across that stage; I don’t think there is anything more fulfilling than that right now.
Who would you like to have dinner with?
Of course, I have to say the Obama family. I’m so interested in how their lives have changed since they became the First Family; plus, I just want to give Barack Obama a huge hug and tell him “Thank you!”
What advice would you give to other LGBT students?
I want to give advice to students that are allies of the LGBT community. You should know that you don’t have to be a member of the LGBT community to stand up for what is right. Everyone should take a stand for LGBT equality – whether you are a gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender student, we need to stick together!
