Joyous Shower of Stoles Sunday

By: Susan Creagh

Our little United Methodist Church in Williamston, MI displayed stoles from the Shower of Stoles Project. The last time we hosted the Stoles, it was a somber day with lots of time for reflection.

Not this time! We were far from somber, as it was Kids' Sunday with the children's choir in full voice. There were grandparents and friends visiting, including family members who had just recently dealt with coming out issues. It was a very powerful day in the little stone church.

There were four folks from the church who were invited to tell their stories of being part of our reconciling church. We had representation from our eldest, our youngest, our conference representative and me, the lone lesbian on the list. It was truly touching to hear the others speak as they were bringing in history of the reconciling process, that many did not know, as well as pointing out the feelings from "the other side." I spoke of a journey that has gone full circle from attending church alone on an Easter Sunday eleven years ago to celebrating my Granddaughter's baptism this last Easter along with my partner, my ex-husband and all our extended family. It was an amazing journey and one I was anxious to tell.

I feel that this day was one of the most deeply enriching days we have had in the church for a long time - speaking of hope and promise...promise of a safe place to worship for all.
