Soulmates

We met at the same time as the characters from the movie Brokeback Mountain. This was a time when we could be refused alcohol; our publications could be seized by the post office as “obscene”; and television, theater and movies wouldn’t depict us.
We set up our own standards on how we would live and deal with the world. We always thought ourselves blessed for having met our soulmate, so we never felt shame. We presented ourselves to the world, including employers and families, as a couple — and would not accept lesser treatment.
After 42 years, we can still say that our relationship is the best thing ever to happen to us.
