Best thing to happen to gay people
By John
"My parents came to visit last weekend and we discussed the federal marriage amendment as well as the decision in Massachusetts and the marriages in San Francisco. My father, who was a conservative Republican my entire life growing up told us that he and my mother (who was conversely a Democrat) both went to the Iowa Democratic caucuses! I could have been knocked over with a feather! He explained that before he looked at the fiscal implications of a Republican v. Democrat, but now that his grandson was involved, he saw the importance of a Democrat in the White House for our civil liberties, because he didn't want anything to jeopardize the family my partner and I have worked so hard to create. His opinion was that the majority of people are changing their perceptions of gay people and that as they get to know more gay people, it's harder to think of them as ‘those gay people’ but instead as their attorney, accountant, coworker, etc. He thought the best thing to happen to gay people were gay people themselves. The more we have strength to live our lives the more respect we generate."
