I want to follow in my father's footsteps
By John Frantin
"When the province of Ontario, Canada, rather suddenly started allowing same-sex marriage in 2003, I came out to my parents. While speaking with my father, we touched upon gay marriage, and I told him that I felt my being able to marry would not in some way jeopardize the institution of marriage, but help to solidify it. I went on to say that I felt this way because now I could stand up and say that I want to follow in my father's footsteps and commit to a long-term, loving, monogamous relationship. My father started crying when I said that, and he said that it suddenly made sense to him. I think that when I related my desires to emulate him and his success in his marriage to my mother, he was able to see the validity and importance in gay marriage."
