Deeply Upset to Be an American Now

“Growing up, all I heard in school was how we should never discriminate against another person. You’d get detention for calling someone a bad name. What is the difference with this? My best friend Eric [who is gay] wants a family some day, just like I do. Why should he have to live his life without be able to say he’s married to the person he loves? It is so unfair and as far as I’m concerned, if President Bush chooses to [support] this constitutional amendment against gay marriages, he should also ban interracial marriages. He should take away the rights of every person, because when you take the rights away from one group of people, it’s discriminating against the rest. As a heterosexual 20-year-old female, I just want to express how deeply upset I am to be an American right now.”
