Simple, Basic Rights
Shelley and I have been together for more than four years. We were "legally" married in the state of Oregon for a short period of time in 2004. But because our marriage is no longer considered a legal binding contract, we are not afforded the same rights afforded all married heterosexual couples.
Hospital Experiences
There is a law on the books in Tennessee that keeps us from having a civil marriage. The Federal Marriage Amendment would write discrimination into the Constitution. This is just unfortunate hate speech.
Soulmates
We met at the same time as the characters from the movie Brokeback Mountain. This was a time when we could be refused alcohol; our publications could be seized by the post office as "obscene"; and television, theater and movies wouldn’t depict us.
The Newlyweds
Ed and I met 39 years ago as teachers in the Greenwich Connecticut Public School system and became immediate friends. In a year, we became partners for life.
I Ask for Nothing Less than Marriage Equality
I know that someday I will meet my soul mate and someday have a wedding or commitment ceremony in Texas. I ask for nothing less than marriage equality.
Crossing the Border
"I now pronounce you legally wedded spouses."
I can’t describe the thrill we felt when the Canadian marriage commissioner said these words to us. To know that an entire country recognized our love was amazing.
