Know an HRC Intern: Anthony Moll
Name: Anthony Moll
Hometown: Santa Rosa, CA (map)
School: University of Maryland University College
Major: Communication Studies
HRC Department: Communications
Why intern at HRC?
I wanted to intern at the Human Rights Campaign because it is an organization that I truly believe in and I really feel for the work we are doing here.
What has been your favorite project at HRC?
I had a chance to help with HRC’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” rally with Kathy Griffin and the work that went into that was really exciting. It was great talking to people on the street about it and it was a great opportunity to work to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
What issue is most pressing for the queer community on your campus?
I’m a non-traditional student and as such, I go to a non-traditional school and go to classes on non-traditional campuses. I go to UMBC, which sells itself as a military school and they’re very open with working with military members and veterans. For UMBC students, I think the most pressing issue would be repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and all the things that go into that.
What other issues interest you besides LGBT equality?
Some other issues that interest me are politics as a whole, but specifically the libertarian movement. Another issue I’m passionate about is homelessness in the District and around the United States.
What do you do when you’re not out being an activist?
This semester, I'm buried in school work when I’m not out being an activist. When I get a chance, I enjoy running and I’m trying to complete my first full marathon (that’s 26.2 miles) this year. I also snowboard during the winter season and, whenever possible, I try to get to the beach to surf.
What was the last song you downloaded?
I don’t know if it’s the last song I downloaded, but the last album I downloaded was Volume Two from She and Him.
What upcoming events are you most excited about?
There are a couple of events I’m excited about that are coming up. HRC is having a Veterans’ Lobby Day in May to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” A couple of LGBT organizations in the area are hosting EqualiCon in April and I’m really excited for that as well. EqualiCon is a grassroots organizing convention to bring young activists from around the region together to strategize, network and discuss the work that they’re doing.
Who would you like to have dinner with?
If I could have dinner with anybody right now, I think it would probably be Anderson Cooper. He is a great role model in the media community and an outstanding journalist.
What advice would you give to LGBT students?
If I’d give any advice to LGBT students, it would be to come out if you’re not already. Also, find time to do the little things that contribute to equality in the United States.
