Why intern at HRC?

I am extremely passionate about HRC’s mission and wanted to make all the positive change I could for the LGBT community. Interning at HRC has allowed me to truly become a part of the fight for equality and is a great way to make a difference.

What has been your favorite project at HRC?

The repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” campaign has been the main focus of the Field team this spring and it was so much fun to be a part of. There’s an exhilarating sense of urgency and extreme determination within the department. It’s been amazing to watch the outpouring of support from all over the country and the energy that has been built up in the field. The repeal of DADT is such an important step for LGBT equality and being able to be a part of it from within the Human Rights Campaign has been an amazing experience.

What issue is most pressing for the queer community on your campus?

Fortunately, at George Washington, the LGBT community is generally very well accepted within the student body. So, I would say the most pressing issue is encouraging the queer community to participate in advocacy and actively join in the fight for equality.

What other issues interest you besides LGBT equality?

I’ve always been very involved in several civil rights issues, such as protecting a woman’s right to choose, etc.  I’m also interested in education and youth empowerment.

What do you do when you’re not out being an activist?

When I’m not being an activist, and not buried under lots of schoolwork, I’m a Dance minor so I usually head to the dance studio. I also use my free time to read, cook, hang out with friends and explore the city.

What was the last song you downloaded?

The last song I downloaded was “Little Secrets” by Passion Pit. It’s SUCH a good song and so much fun to dance around to. I’ve been listening to it non-stop ever since.

What upcoming events are you most excited about?

I’m really excited about our upcoming Veteran’s Lobby Day on May 12. Hundreds of veterans are flying in from around the country to talk to their Congressmen and show their support for the repeal of DADT. I can’t wait to see all of these brave and courageous men and women come to Washington to share their experiences and fight for what they believe is right.

Who would you like to have dinner with?

I would definitely have dinner with Sean Connery. He’s probably the coolest man to have ever lived, plus he has a Scottish accent.

What advice would you give to LGBT students?

The best advice I can give is to keep on truckin’—there are going to be times that are really hard, but you always have to remember that for every person that disagrees with you, there are many others who support you and believe that you’re perfect just the way you are. Stand up for yourself and your rights—it might take awhile, but eventually we’re going to get full equality, and that starts with each individual not giving up and demanding that their voice be heard.
