Why intern at HRC?

I wanted to contribute to the fight for equality and felt that HRC would be a great place to start, given that it is the largest organization working for LGBT civil rights.

What do you like most about working at HRC?

I really like the people. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and I love hanging out with the other interns.

What has been your favorite project at HRC?

I enjoyed volunteering at HRC’s March Board Meeting and Equality Convention. I especially enjoyed Lobby Day because I got to witness volunteers from all over the country come to Capitol Hill and meet with their state representatives to discuss LGBT issues.

What issue is most pressing for the queer community on your campus?

My campus was pretty liberal, but I think one issue was just getting more students to come to LGBT-related events and meetings. There was often poor turnout at events and whether that was because people were uncomfortable showing up, lack of interest, or some other reason, I think that greater visibility and awareness about the campus’ LGBT groups would be good for the university’s students.

What other issues interest you besides LGBT equality?

Besides LGBT equality, I am interested in women’s rights and domestic violence issues.

What do you do when you’re not out being an activist?

When I’m not out being an activist, I like to hang out with friends, hang out in the city, read, and write…the list goes on.

What was the last song you downloaded?

The last song I downloaded was “Strawberry Wine” by Deana Carter. It’s a sweet little country song that my fellow interns and I listen to all the time while we’re working.

What upcoming events are you most excited about?

I’m excited about HRC’s upcoming Nurse Jackie premiere party. If it’s anything like the HER HRC events that took place across the country, it should be a lot of fun.

Who would you like to have dinner with?

I would like to have dinner with Alec Mapa because he is hilarious. I probably wouldn’t be able to eat very much though as I would be too busy laughing.

What advice would you give to LGBT students?

Persevere and don’t stop fighting the good fight until full equality is achieved.
