State laws govern everything from the legal status of relationships between same-sex partners to the ability of transgender people to list their correct gender identity on their birth certificates. The Human Rights Campaign works with state leaders to advance the rights of LGBT people across the nation, from Alabama to Wyoming.

Idaho School Law
Idaho law does not address school issues relating to sexual orientation or gender identity.
Idaho Sodomy Law
The Idaho sodomy law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26, 2003, as a result of the Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas.
Idaho Surrogacy Law
The Idaho statutes do not address surrogacy agreements, but case law indicates such contracts may be enforceable in the state. The issue of surrogacy agreements involving lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) individuals has not yet been considered by the courts.
Illinois Adoption Law
Illinois Birth Certificate Law: Gender Identity Issues
Illinois will issue new birth certificates to post-operative transsexuals.
Illinois Custody and Visitation Law
Courts typically will not consider a parent’s sexual orientation in custody and visitation determinations unless it is shown to adversely affect or harm the children. Illinois courts have held that a transgender parent did not have standing to petition for custody and visitation because the marriage to the biological parent was deemed invalid. Courts have not granted custody or visitation rights to the non-biological parent of a child.
Illinois Donor Insemination Law
Illinois law permits unmarried women to undergo donor insemination.
Illinois Hate Crimes Law
State law covers hate crimes based on sexual orientation but not gender identity.
Illinois Healthcare Laws
State healthcare laws relating to the LGBT community in the areas of medical decision making and hospital visitation.
Illinois Marriage/Relationship Recognition Law
Illinois law purports to ban recognition of marriages between same-sex couples. Illinois confers all state-level spousal rights for parties in a civil union.
