State laws govern everything from the legal status of relationships between same-sex partners to the ability of transgender people to list their correct gender identity on their birth certificates. The Human Rights Campaign works with state leaders to advance the rights of LGBT people across the nation, from Alabama to Wyoming.

Illinois Non-Discrimination Law
Illinois law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
Illinois School Laws
Illinois law protects against bullying in schools based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Illinois Sodomy Law
The Illinois sodomy law was repealed in 1962.
Illinois Surrogacy Law
Illinois law allows gestational surrogacy agreements (where the surrogate mother is not the biological contributor of the egg), but does not address traditional surrogacy agreements (in which the surrogate mother is the biological contributor of the egg). The issue of surrogacy agreements involving lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) individuals has not yet been considered by the courts.

Indiana Birth Certificate Law: Gender Identity Issues
Indiana birth certificates do not designate a person’s sex.
Indiana Custody and Visitation Law
Indiana courts typically will not consider a parent’s sexual orientation in custody and visitation determinations unless it is shown to adversely affect or harm the children. There are no published cases dealing with transgender parents. Courts have ruled in support of same-sex co-parents.
Indiana Donor Insemination Law
There is no provision on the artificial insemination procedure in Indiana state law.
