State Laws


Whether you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or straight-supportive, your state’s laws probably have a major impact on your life. State laws govern everything from the legal status of relationships between same-sex partners to the ability of transgender people to list their correct gender identity on their birth certificates. The Human Rights Campaign works with state leaders to advance the rights of LGBT people across the nation, from Alabama to Wyoming.

Minnesota Non-Discrimination Law

Minnesota law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Minnesota School Laws

Minnesota law addresses school issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Minnesota Sodomy Law

The Minnesota sodomy law was struck down in 2001.

Minnesota Surrogacy Law

It is unclear how Minnesota law treats surrogacy agreements because there are no statutory provisions or published cases dealing with the issue of surrogacy. However, there is an unpublished court opinion and anecdotal evidence suggesting the law would look favorably on surrogacy agreements involving lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) individuals.

Mississippi Adoption Law

Mississippi Birth Certificate Law: Gender Identity Issues

Mississippi permits post-operative transsexuals to amend their sex on their birth certificates.

Mississippi Custody and Visitation Law

Courts have used a parent’s sexual orientation to deny, restrict or modify custody and visitation. There have been no cases dealing with transgender parents or same-sex co-parents.

Mississippi Donor Insemination Law

There is no provision on donor insemination in Mississippi state law.

Mississippi Hate Crimes Law

State law does not address hate crimes based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

Mississippi Healthcare Laws

State healthcare laws relating to the LGBT community in the areas of medical decision making and hospital visitation.
