Celebrating Marriage Equality

HRC celebrates the third anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts. Almost 9,000 same-sex couples have been legally married under the Massachusetts law that grants same-sex couples the state-level benefits and protections of marriage. On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Ending Unfair Tax Treatment

Under federal tax law, same-sex couples who receive domestic partner benefits have to pay taxes on those benefits — but opposite-sex couples get their spousal benefits tax-free. To end this injustice, a new bill has been introduced in Congress, the Domestic Partner Tax Equity for Health Plan Beneficiaries Act.
